Many women cringe at the thought of so called “maternity clothing” conjuring negative and terrifying images of circus tents and mail bags, clothes to hide and conceal the fact that they are pregnant rather than celebrate it. Are they ashamed of being pregnant? Unhappy with their figure? There is now a huge selection of flattering and very competitively priced maternity clothes available.

You don’t have to buy maternity clothes straight away, in the early stages of your pregnancy, just buy clothes that are a couple sizes bigger so as to accommodate the extra space. Dont be ashamed or embarrassed of your growing bump, its something to be proud of, not hidden away! Dont hide your bump under loose, ill fitting sacks, but display it with slim, fitted blouses and shirts.

Darker shades of colours are great not only for their slimming effect, but also for hiding wear and tear, try and co-ordinate your colour scheme though, if there is too much contrast between your top and bottom halves, you will look both shorter and wider. Slim-legged trousers will serve you better
than baggy ones, whilst baggy trousers will hide everything in their enveloping embrace, a decent pair of slim line trousers will draw more focus and attention to the areas which havent gained weight.

Especially during the earlier months of your pregnancy, buy plenty of skirts with expandable waistlines.

Make sure to browse online and in charity stores for second hand maternity clothing as well, the cost of maternity clothing can quickly add up and remember you are realistically only going to be wearing it for nine months. If you are tight for money, you may want to see if other mothers would be prepared to sell off their old maternity clothes to you, most likely they will. It will most likely be lying gathering dust in the attic, so might as well put it to good use!

Dont forget the most important factor in all of this: make sure what you are wearing is comfortable and you feel you can wear. Heels are a no no, your balance isn’t going to be the greatest during your pregnancy and the last thing you want is to place you and your baby in risk should you take a fall, so make do with a sensible pair of flats. Its not your feet people will be looking at anyway!
